Hands Down, My Two Favorite Protein Smoothies
“Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants,
I now give you everything.”
Genesis 9:3.
In week four of Break Through: Six Weeks to Demolish Diet Culture Strongholds, we do a deep dive into all the benefits of protein; and, because many struggle to eat sufficient amounts, tips on how to incorporate more into your every day. One of the best ways to get more on those chaotic mornings and general “on the run’ lifestyle: smoothies. Here are two of my absolute favorites (although as I type this…I’m reminiscing about a summer pear, arugula and ginger smoothie).
SPICED CHAI
Ingredients:
8 oz. milk, almond milk, rice milk, soy milk, oat milk (heck any creamy liquid you prefer)
1 scoop vanilla protein of your preference
1 T nut butter (again….almond, peanut, cashew…it really doesn’t matter)
1/2 ripe banana (frozen for thicker smoothie)
1/4 t ground nutmeg
1/4 t ground cardamon (optional but super duper recommended!)
1/4-1/2 t ground ginger (how much punch you want)
1/2 -3/4 t ground cinnamon
Directions:
Got a good blender or bullet?…just add liquid first…then blend well. Adjust liquid for desired consistency.
MY TAKE ON GERMAN BLACK FOREST CAKE
Ingredients:
8 oz. milk, coconut milk, almond milk, rice milk, soy milk, oat milk (heck any creamy liquid you prefer—coconut milk is my preference here to bump up the Black Forest cake vibe)
1 scoop chocolate protein of your preference
handful frozen tart cherries
1 T nut butter (again….almond, peanut, cashew…it really doesn’t matter)
1/4 c shredded coconut (unsweetened so not gummy)
1/2 t vanilla extract (optional if you have no time for fussy)
Directions:
Liquid first. Always liquid first. Blend, blend, blend.
Tip: you can reduce liquid and increase frozen cherries and turn this into a smoothie bowl. Top with shredded coconut, some nuts, and a frozen cherry or four.
***Any smoothie recipe can be a great way to get in a serving of veggies. Add a handful of kale or spinach leaves. Two things to note when adding leafy greens: 1. blend until truly pulverized. 2. the color will now be something akin to well, unappetizing, but the flavor will not alter.
